Cape Breeze

Cape Breeze (formerly Archipelayo) is our award-winning game for Project Fizzyo. Designed around the physiotherapy care for children with Cystic Fibrosis, our game turns their boring routines into a fun playable experience.

Project Fizzyo

https://fizzyo.github.io/Project Fizzyo is an ambitious initiative from the University College London and Microsoft, that aims to improve the physiotherapy care of young children with Cystic Fibrosis, by turning their routines into video games so that they might better engage with their exercises.

Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic Fibrosis is a lifelong genetic condition affecting roughly 10,000 people in the UK alone that causes a thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system of sufferers. This can cause a whole host of health problems and while there is no cure, there are lots of treatments that can help people lead longer and healthier lives. This mucus that builds in their lungs must be cleared daily in order to prevent infections by performing sets of breathing exercises know as Airway Clearance Techniques. These exercises can help to improve quality of life for sufferers. Click here to find out more.

The game uses the breathing exercises the patients must perform as a means of control, with a controller specially designed to take breath as an input with an extra button to add further controls to the games. The players can then play the game by breathing into their physiotherapy device turning our game into their prescribed routines. We try to avoid making the controls too complicated as having too many inputs or detract from the exercise itself, as it’s very important for the games enjoyability factor that the breathing exercises are the focus and are done swiftly.

Progression

The island is home to many different groups of people from castaway’s to pirates, long forgotten dinosaurs and ancient peoples who have dwelled on the island since time immemorial, but most importantly the island is now home to you, the player. Using in game rewards from performing your routines correctly, you can progress the game by unlocking new items, minigames and outfits.

Insights

With over 100,000 breaths recorded during a clinical trial we are able to gain great insights into how the game can affect players breathing routines. Analytics are essential for measuring the games efficacy and we made sure to use them extensively to constantly improve and monitor our games effectiveness.

Where is the game now?

After undergoing clinical trials the data from the game is currently undergoing review and analysis by the fantastic researchers behind Project Fizzyo at UCL. You can keep up to date with the progress of the study at https://twitter.com/FizzyoCF where you can find information on any future trials or updates!
