Ophthalmology training game
The Arclight Project
A social enterprise based in the School of Medicine at the University of St Andrews, the Arclight Project is committed to enabling low and middle income countries to equip train and empower health workers of all grades to confidently diagnose and manage eye and ear disease. A growing team of active clinical practitioners, designers and experts the aim of the Arclight team is to create low cost, scalable solutions. The Arclight itself is an extremely low cost, multipurpose ophthalmoscope and endoscope which is incredibly lightweight, small and magnitudes cheaper than current devices.
Our Partnership
Making use of the incredible expertise within the team at the Arclight Project we have partnered to create a game which works alongside their already existing suite of tools and workshops. With the help of Scottish Edge we have been able to develop initial prototypes and begin testing.
Training Clinical Skills
Built around skills needed to provide high quality care and assessment skills around eye care our ophthalmology training game teaches and trains the player the needed skillset. Training these skills often require expensive expert supervision, real patients or volunteers and often no immediate feedback on whether their decisions were accurate.
In our game however, players get a safe environment to practice and train their clinical assessment skills in risk free manner all whilst being given accurate and immediate feedback on where to improve. Currently the game teaches core concepts and skills covering pupil responses, anterior segment, fundal reflex and direct ophthalmoscopy. All of which will be expanded alongside future planned content.
Low Resource Applications
A learning tool like this especially during the pandemic and moving forward as we try to limit unnecessary face to face interaction where clinical practice opportunities may be limited, is invaluable. This also applies to areas that may not have access to expert supervision, practice patients or expensive equipment.
With over 250 million people suffering from visual impairments worldwide and 80% of these being preventable with early detection or better care it is clear there is a lack of accessible eyecare. For areas like rural Africa that may not have access to the right tools our game, developed on low end mobile devices, can help bring the latest educational tools to the people in need of it most. The game has already been tested in rural areas of Rwanda, Kenya and India to great success and we look forward to tracking the impact that we can have.
Future Development
We plan on continue to expand the topics that the game covers and the depth that each topic goes into. Incorporating more techniques and integration with the suite of Arclight tools and workshops helping to provide an in depth educational package for those in need.
How can I get this?
